What goals do you have for your child’s education? Have you ever thought about that? It may be as simple as graduating from high school or as intense as being accepted into an Ivy League school. Maybe it is for your child to read at grade level, pass their current grade, or finally gain the self-confidence that you know you want them to have.
The Importance of Educational Goals
The actual goal does not matter as much as the act of actually having one.
Why is it important to have educational goals?
- It helps you measure progress. For example, is your child reading at grade level, are they gaining the skills they need?
- It keeps you motivated. If you don’t know where you are going, it is easy not to do anything to move you closer to the destination.
- It helps to keep you focused. You and your child need a clear vision of where you are going and how you are getting there.
- You feel a sense of urgency which helps keep you accountable.
- Goals help you go further and often go past your original plan.
Why Learning Goals Matter
A lot has changed in the last two years, and I believe learning goals are needed more than ever.
When I think back to when I was a child, I knew that my parents expected me to go to college. That meant that my parents had an educational goal for my life. Because they had that vision, I knew the path that I was on. So it gave me a direction and a way to continue to check and make sure I was heading in the right direction. That was also back when education was not as accessible as it is today and options were limited.
What Happens When Parents Set Academic Goals
I talk with many parents across the country, and when I ask what their learning goals are regarding education, I find that many of them don’t create any until there is a problem. I also hear parents say that they just assumed that their kids would just know or just work towards it.
Several studies have found that when parents set goals, their children are more likely to meet those goals. In other words, the expectations we hold of our children are critical in determining their academic and social outcomes.
Learning Goals for This Year
It is a new year, and if you don’t have an educational goal for your child, I encourage you to make one. If this overwhelms you or you don’t know where to start, you may need help. I have had a lot of parents asking for parent coaching, and I finally have the time to offer this service.
